Common Whitetail

Here's one of my "mug shots" of another common dragonfly, in this case, a male common whitetail. (I promised John N. I would post this for ID.)

It was kind of breezy when I shot this, so I made a quick burst of fast exposures when the perch was moving gently back and forth, to get six exposures to focus-blend.

Canon 50D
Sigma 150 mm. Macro
1/1000 sec. @ f/6.3; ISO 400
Tripod
Parts of 6 exposures (from a 1-second burst) focus-blended in CS5)
Double-processed in ACR to avoid blowing out the white abdomen.

Wayne,

Thanks for the ID, I didn't think that it was right. I have lots of shots of male common whitetails but this one confused me. Came across several images identical to mine and they listed it as a female. Gee you mean everything you read on the internet isn't 100% accurate. He-he!
Thanks again!

John

John,
Glad I could help with the ID.
Yes, there are lots of errors on the Web. I just did a Google image search for "common whitetail female" and found three pictures of MALES (before their tails turned white) labeled as females. In addition, there were three others shots of completely different species.

Well done, Wayne. I like the way the dark splotches in background closely matches the dark splotches on the wings. Good choice on the DOF, and the details are excellent throughout the DF from the stacking. As I said, well done.

Beautiful detail. I like that the image is quite artistic and still contains all the points needed for indentification purposes. Nicely done

Beautiful specimen and great composition & detail. I tend to prefer softer light for dragonfly shots, though.
