Delicate Twilight

Utah's Delicate Arch before sunrise.

From the archives - I've been sitting on this image since October 2011, mostly because I instinctively ignored my shots of Delicate Arch due to it being extremely over-photographed.

This is another image that requires viewing on a dark background to appreciate the shadow subtleties: http://www.flickr.com/photos/schmalpal/7683210480/in/photostream/lightbox/

Canon 40D, EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8

Landscape & sky gradient: f/8, ISO 100, 30 mins before sunrise
Stars: f/2.8, ISO 1600, 30 sec, 1.5 hrs before sunrise

Like it. Even this has been done some many times before, yours is well-executed.

Very elegant, not sure why this doesn't have more comments. I am not sure how I feel about the stars stopping so abruptly, but there may have been some low clouds or haze obstructing them. A nice fresh look at Delicate, congrats! :toast:

Love the soft, delicate light on the arch and surrounding rock, which complements the starry sky exceedingly well. Remarkable how your link image works so much better with the dark background. exquisite work.

Very nice! I really like this, Alex. The color and light are fantastic imo, and I love the mood this has. The link to the view with darker bg looks fantastic! Beautiful work.

Thanks dudes. Zack, in the full version the stars go down farther - but they're pretty dim closer to the horizon, so they don't show up in the 800px web version. There was one lower one that was right next to the arch that I cloned out because it was distracting, though.

Yeah these night shots really take a beating when it comes to compression for the web. Makes sense with the glow that is coming from the horizon that the stars would be significantly dimmer down there. This makes me want to go out and do some early morning star shooting, thanks for the inspiration man!
