Got a chance for hummers today. This guy was defending a feeder at the nature center. Unfortunately he spent most of his time in the shadows. Do wish he had selected a nicer perch.

Canon T3i
1/200 @ F-7.1 ISO 400
Canon EF-70-300 plus 1.4 extender @210mm(?)

Fill flash, monopod

Sometimes you gotta take what you're given. Yes, a nicer perch would be terrific but the hummer is tack sharp with a gorget that is colored beautifully. You might select just the bird and lighten him somewhat. Just a thought.

Very nice, John. Just love the ruby red throat for which it's named. The wings speak of motion and as David mentioned the hummer is really sharp. I think you did really well capturing this image considering the lighting conditions.

Very fine image, John, under difficult lighting conditions. The hummer is tack sharp and that gorget stands out beautifully. Excellent balance between natural light and flash.

Nice detail showing in the larger image, John, and I like the perch. The bright bg makes it difficult to bring the hummer out optimally.

Gorgeous shot in a difficult setting. The perch doesn't bother me as much as the bright background areas(especially bottom left), My taste would be to tone them down a bit.
