Frog Princess

We had the family over for the weekend and the kids found some Wood Frogs (Rana sylvatica).

They know the fairy tale of the "Frog Princess". No, it's not the one where a young woman kisses a frog, who then turns into a prince. It's the one where a princess has been punished by her father to live in a frog skin.

Anyway, we thought it would be more fitting to offer the princess a bed of flowers, rather than only the leaf of an elephant plant (BG and base).

These frogs are quite small, maybe 1.5 cm for the body (excluding legs).

It's obviously a staged photo, though the frogs certainly were not captive (and they sure did hop away). The frogs were returned unharmed to their habitat.

Canon 7D, Sigma 150 macro + 1.4 TC, ISO 200, f/16, 1/200 sec, EX580-II with diffuser. Manual exposure was about -2.5 EV for BG with subject exposed with ETTL-II flash (+ 2.33 EV), HH. PP in LR4 and cropped to 82 %.

Thanks for looking. C & Cs are appreciated. Roger.

Great idea to move the Princess onto this great looking perch/bed, it suits her royal status perfectly:wink:
Novel image & technically well done. I especially like your POV here Roger :toast:
You should send the kids out frog hunting more often!

Great frog shot, Roger! Good focus on the eyes, nice colors, great comp. . .very nice overall. I had a similar experience with a frog that got caught in our garage. After I released him he let me take some photos before hopping away, except my frog was a bit bigger than yours. Fascinating critters!

Perfect focus on this young frog, and the low POV and bed of flowers really make this unique.
Wood frogs are such quick little critters, you did well to get this one to pose.

Very nice comp, staged or not. The flowers are a great perch, the below eye level perspective works well, and the colors are striking. The frog looks like it was dipped in gold paint.

Thanks all for viewing and for commenting. The photo won the first prize in my employer's photo contest (section: animals) and the kids are already planning for the next frog hunt. We have about 1 foot of snow right now.
