Sycamore Bark #1

by Mark Seaver

Gallery: Weekly ChallengePosted August 16, 2012320 views10 comments
I've tried close-up, abstracts of Sycamore bark for many years with limited success. Doug's challenge topic got me to spend some time in the woods searching for prime candidates and I finally found a large, freshly broken limb laying on the ground that nicely shows the colors and shapes that can be found in this tree's bark. (5D3, 100mm macroL, 1/5s, f14, iso 100, tripod) Cropped slightly from the bottom for better composition.

What a beautiful piece of bark you found, Mark! I really like your comp with the diagonal bands of color and the raised curved lines going every which way. In the larger version especially, even the bands of color have variety in their texture. It almost looks like it could be an aerial view of strip farming.

Nice capture. An abstract with nice lines, bands of color, and texture.

Mark, very nice! The bands of earthly colors and "suture lines" garner my interest.

Wow--I would never have guessed what this was. I agree that it looks like an aerial view. Beautiful shot.

Cool image. I especially like the juxtposition of colors and textures. I get the impression of an aerial view of some strange cultivated areas with hedgerows or dikes separating the 'fields'. And interesting how different this and your other Sycamore bark image is.
