It must be abstract day

On my last trip to Yellowstone (October 2011) I consciously spent as much time looking down over the side of the boardwalk as I did looking out over the landscape. Fascinating park.

This is one of the many abstract images Yellowstone offered up.

7D, 28-235mm lens @ 117mm, ISO 400, 1/320 sec at f5.6 +1/3EV (slight crop).

Comments welcome, thanks for looking!

I agree that Yellowstone has tremendous abstract potential. At the same time, I find abstracts very challenging because it's so hard to get the right balance between keeping the eyes moving throughout the whole frame and giving them places to stop and "rest". In this picture, I really like the white sinter on the right and how it's set off by the warm yellow background. I see a flying Eagle with it's head almost dead center and a wing edges above and a claw below. I don't find the darker, greenish areas on the left very attractive, so I could see cropping this to a vertical to emphasize the Eagle.

Beautiful abstract. I agree with Mark's crop suggestion. I think that the vertical presentation would make this a much stronger image. Nice job

I too like abstract images and find this one effective. The repetition here is color with nice textural and color variation to create interest. Would be nice to see a series of these with the different colors from Yellowstone's pools.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Mark - I hadn't even noticed the shape of an eagle. Here is the vertical version for comparison - I think it does reduce the amount of aimless wandering the eye can do.

Fascinating, and the vertical crop works well to concentrate my attention. I think the crop makes it more abstract by eliminating the part that make me want to analyze it as realistic image.
