#549-Palmetto/Pine+repost

This is an image that I posted almost two years ago before I knew anything about processing, and I've reprocessed it to post for this challenge. Unfortunately, the image compression quality is only 69% for the smaller version and 50% for the larger version, so I don't know how it will look.

Here is a link to the previously posted basically unprocessed version from January 2011.

I'd love to know whether you think the processing this time is good or whether you think something should be done differently. One thing I did is used Levels, which completely changed the coloring of the image. I also sharpened, and I wonder if the amount of sharpening is good.

Comments, opinions and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Barbara, I have to say I prefer the processing on your prior post better. This image is too bright and too sharpened. I'm sure compression is not being kind to the image as well, but nothing you can do about that.

Barbara, I like the line in the trees and the palmettos in the foreground, but I have to agree with Carol, in that I find this version too stark. However, I think the earlier version seems a bit soft, so the best result should be somewhere in between. You may find that using an "S" in curves works better that a levels adjustment.

I agree with the others that your former post is the better of the two. I really like the softness of that early version and I think the processing (or lack of) looks good in that. Sometimes photos don't really need much done to be good. Apart from the processing, I like your subject and the comp is very nice in this image. The strip of green spiky palmettos along the bottom provides a great base for the start and straight gray trees. The green appearing at the top provides a nice balance with the bottom green.

Thank you so much for the feedback. Here's a repost that I think is better. Please let me know what you think, if any of you see this. Thank you!

Yep, the repost is a big improvement. To my eye, it's right on the money.

I like the comp and the subject. I would prefer the processing somewhere in between. This looks a little overdone and the first one looks a little flat and dark.

OOps, sorry, I didn't see the repost, which looks just right!

You have a pretty good image here. This is what pines and palmettoes are all about. I think a number of different creative treatments would work with this one. The trunks really separate well in th version that folks are objecting to. The palmetto do better in the version below. You can't please everyone, but I think you are on the right track.
