I'm kind-of busy with a mono/duotone series (as per my last elephant posting) and am having quite a bit of fun playing around with some images that I feel fit the medium.

This Spotted Hyena was photographed early on an overcast morning in the far northern regions of the Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Techs:
Nikon D3s with Nikkor 500mm f4 VR-II
f5.6 @ 1/500 SS @ ISO-2200

Very good usage of duotoning here Morkel, it really fits the scene. I also quite like the pose you've captured, and the positioning is in the frame perfect! :wavey:

Great selection for this series IMO Morkel. Love the pose, the fact he has a mouthful of food and all the surrounding birds really give a since of environment. My only nit, is I might back-off a tad from the heavy vignette. My guess is your trying to add drama to the image, but I think it already has plenty of drama on it's own. I would still keep some, But for my personal taste, when I add vignette, I add enough to create more mood, but hopefully without my viewer really knowing I added it (unless of course they have a trained eye and they are looking for it specifically).
Overall....terrific!

Hi Morkel,

Very interesting (and I do mean that). I always struggle in critiquing B&W (or monotone or duotone) images - primarily because the big question in my mind is if the image is more effectively presented this way vs. in colour (which is, of course, impossible to determine unless one also posts the colour version). In absolute terms I like this, but I do tend to agree with Kurt on the vignette - I'm not really sure this image needs it (and to me they're always a bit "contrived" - if you know what I mean?). One honest reaction - seems dumb, but I really like the inclusion of the birds (scavengers of some sort, I assume) - to me they add a lot to the story here.

Overall tho', I think this image does work and is quite compelling. And it's a nice "step outside of the box" - well done...

Cheers...

Brad

Thanks for the honest feedback guys. I know the vignette is a personal thing. I am trying to work it in a bit more subtly in subsequent conversions as I want to use it to add mood and focus the view on the subject.

The birds are actually spurfowl...pretty much like a pheasant so not scavengers at all
