Tree Shrew

Tree shrews are a primitive mammal found in southeast Asia. They most resemble tree squirrels, but at one time were considered primative primates. Today most consider them in the family Tupaiidae. This photo of a young tree shrew was taken at the Miller Park Zoo.

Hey John,

I have to say that one doesn't find tree shrews (or ANY other type of shrews either) in this gallery too commonly - so thanks a bunch for posting this! My exposure to primate evolution is decades old and I find it interesting that what I was taught (about tree shrews being in the lineage that lead to primates) is now considered out of date.

I like your selective focus here and the positioning of the subject in the frame works quite well for me. The background colour is a bit on the funky side but there was little you could do about that (given the shooting situation).

Thanks for sharing this shot of a very rarely photographed species...

Cheers...

Brad
