Salmon Bear

A young brown bear enjoying his fresh salmon lunch. I tried to dull down the "gull art" on the rocks (thanks for the input on my last post guys), hopefully the eye isn't drawn there.

As always, comments & suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Kenai Peninsula, Alaska
Sony A55V
Sigma 150-500 @ 210mm
1/200 sec @ f5.6
iso 400

Hi Guy,

I think you were successful in de-emphasizing the gull droppings - they're a total non-issue for me in this shot. Detail looks good to me here and I think you nailed the depth of field. I think you've included the right amount of surrounding habitat to keep the emphasis on the bear yet show the terrain in which it lives - well done on that. About my only minor nit is the piece of salmon - looks a bit too "punchy" on my monitor (to the point where it drew my eye more than the bear did).

Cheers...thanks for sharing this one...

I think you have a great shot here. Very clear of the bear, his coat, and the fish. Koodos to you:)

Hey Guy...good to see some images from you and hope all is going well for you up in Alaska. I think this shot has a lot of great stuff going for it. Really like the story you're telling here. I also love the comp! My only nit is the amount of noise (especially on the rear of the bear). At ISO 400, I have to assume it was slightly underexposed and the noise was more introduced during PP? Not sure what you really could have done about it since you were already at 1/200 and shooting wide open (I think...not super familiar with the Sigma lens)...except possibly increasing your ISO...but I don't know how the Sony handles higher ISOs and if that would have created as much or more noise than bringing up the shadows and blacks in PP did. Regardless...it is still a really nice shot.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Brad - agreed about the salmon, the bear (in my mind at least) should be the focus of the shot, not the fish. Kurt - all is well here, thanks for asking. You nailed it on the noise, underexposed to maintain a decent shutter speed, wide open and at the top of my acceptable iso for the camera. The noise in the fur was introduced in post, still working on the best way to handle that.
