WC# 550 Carefree Years

I'll start this week's challenge since it was my idea.

There are so many things wrong with this image, that I know now, but there are also many things I like about this image. I love the beautiful greens and blues, the fluffy clouds, and the contrast between the wet ocean and the dry cactus. If I came across this scene today, I know I could make a much better image, and yet I still keep coming back to this photo because of the meaning behind the image.

This photo was taken in the late seventies. I had dropped out of college after my junior year and moved from California to Hawaii with a friend. I spent four years in Hawaii, visited many of the islands several times, and took photos all along the way. They were carefree years when the only thing I had to be concerned about was making enough money to pay my share of the rent (and buy/process film of course). Every time I look at this image I remember those fun filled years and that is why it is one of my favorite images.

Maui, Hawaii
Nikkormat FT3
probably 35mm lens
Kodachrome 64 film

P.S. I did finally go back and finish college!

I can certainly understand why this photo would be so meaningful to you, Carol. Sounds like a special 4 years in your life, spent in an amazing place! Even back then you had a photographic instinct. Lots of interesting elements in this photo and with a nice comp. Be fun to go back again and take another picture from this same spot utilizing all your improved skills in picture taking.

Breathtaking view Carol, I really like this because one it's a great shot, and two you've personalized it in a way I'm sure many can identify with. It struck a cord with me because your story's much like mine..
Great presentation, well done :toast:

The fore-ground could be a tad sharper, but the sky is beautiful just as it is, even if it has a couple of flaws that aren't obvious unless you look real hard. Sometimes Kodachrome produced unique characteristics that are hard to mimic with software. If that is where I think it is, there are wind turbines on the far slope now. There are lots of kodachromes out there that have historical as well as sentimental and aesthetic significance.

I'm jealous, because I didn't know how to do "care free" when young. I'm just now trying to work on that in retirement. This is a fine "vacation shot" with great memories, just not NPN super quality. I'd be very interested in how much more built up the "valley" is now as opposed to then.

Robert and Mark, I have not been back to Hawaii for 30 years partly because I would hate to ruin my memories of driving for miles on Maui, Kauai and the Big Island without seeing a gas station, store or fast food restaurant!

In addition to the things that you love about the image, I also love the shadows from the clouds. This is one of those images that can almost put you there.

I wouldn't really change anything...I might crop so the far slopes aren't in the center, but then you loose the clouds and I think that's an important part of the photo
