African Memories

This photo is no technical masterpiece, obviously, but it fits with the theme of the weekly challenge because of what it means to me.

This is from my first safari in Africa, and we were traveling quite often by small plane to get from lodge to lodge. Our planes would land in the middle of the bush on nothing but dirt landing strips with the African dust swirling around us. We'd climb out, unload bags, and off we'd go with another guide to another camp. (If anyone thinks a safari is a laid-back vacation, btw, well... not at all lol.) This is one of the guides who came to meet us, talking with a fellow traveler. I'm not sure why, but it strikes a chord in me, and is one of my favorite images I've taken in Africa.

After my first trip to Africa, I was completely hooked, and went back once a year for a number of years. I encourage my family members and friends to absolutely go at least once. Nothing in the world like it.

A plane that size on a runway that size, well, I guess Alaska is not the only place with bush pilots. I agree with you. The shot has character.

This photo certainly paints a different picture than the usual animal safari photos that we see from Africa. I always have to remind myself to take photos of the trip experience (such as this) and not just the subjects I came to photograph. These types of photos are always nice to look back on to remember the entire experience.

Goodness, was that your plane? It certainly does look big compared to the runway! I have never been to Africa but it would be on my bucket list. As Carol mentioned, photos of the whole experience and not just the "photo shoot" type of shots can be very meaningful and help bring back memories of a trip, so I can see why this photo is special to you.
