Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)

Place: Anthem, AZ
Date: January 8, 2012, 7:34 am
Equipment: Nikon D300, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8 & TC20E (2x), G1325, RRS BH-55, Sidekick
ISO 1600, aperture priority matrix metered, 1/80th @ f/5.6, -2/3 ev compensation
Raw, PS CS3 on Mac, 95% of full frame

Not my typical setting, this is an artifical falls between multi level artifical ponds in one of Phoenix’s largest planned developments. I was there at dawn hoping to see a vagrant Rufous-backed Robin and occupied my time waiting with thre common birds.

This was really just an experiment to see how well the D300 performed at ISO 1600; quite well IMO – there’s no Noise Reduction applied in the camera or in post processing.

Honest critiques requested; all comments appreciated. Please view the larger version if possible.

Not much to say except for at ISO1600 with no noise reduction, that I would agree, the file looks quite good.
I've found that the D300 can produce some good stuff at that ISO but you have to be careful with the exposure. But I'm sure you already knew that.
