As I noted in my comment to John's Honey Bee post, I've also been trying to catch bees in flight. Here, I used a nice dahlia with good separation from the bg. This allowed me to use a little higher fstop for a greater focal plane for both the flower and bee. D700, 180 macro, 1/800 sec, f10, iso 1250. Please view the larger image for greater detail. Comments, questions, and suggestions all welcome. :wavey:

Scott, I like the BG of this photo, I think the OOF colors work well. The bee is nice and sharp, but I do wish it was facing the camera a bit more. But, you take what they give! The ISO at 1250 seems to work OK. Thanks for sharing.

Bees in flight! no challenge there!
Talk about a tough subject.
You're doing well with this, nice job getting the eye nice and sharp. As John noted, I wish the bee would have been turned toward you more. Have you tried using flash? something like a humming bird set up?

hmm...I am not sure how one could tempt a bee to look at you more than such a delicious looking flower! I don't mind the direction it is facing at all. I think I might even crop it a little closer off the top and bottom...to leave less petals. The way the petals are now, there is just enough of them to make you feel like you should see the whole thing, but if there was less of them I think it would eliminate that distraction....just my opinion!

Pleasing warm color tones and great details at the head/legs Scott.
Good BG separation as you say as well.
In a perfect world, a better POV/POF would improve this as John says.
Love the dahlia & comp, great as posted :toast:

Quite stunning color & composition. Some motion blur on the bee. Even in a hover I think the speed should be faster than 1/800 - I would use 1/1600sec.
