Thank you for your comments on Zooming In. Here is a different dahlia and, presumably, different bee, but the same basic set up. I liked the background on this view so I boosted the DOF a little to get a little more detail in both the flower and bg. Shot at 8:00am in softer light at f11, 1/500, and iso 800. Not sure I got the bee sufficiently sharp at 1/500. They move fast! Nikon D700, 180 macro. Larger image included. Comments, suggestions, and questions welcome. :wavey:

Gorgeous photo Scott :) I agree with you regarding the bg. I much prefer a hint of detail and mixed colour, as opposed to a solid bg. The colours are stunning, which means you had good control of the natural lighting :) I have tried to take many photos like this, stopping a bee in flight, but my camera only goes to 1/250 of a second. Nowhere near fast enough, to catch something like this.

Love it :)

Scott, to me the bee looks nice and sharp, but the flower is even sharper. Great colors. What bothers me is the position of the bee. It is half over the flower and half just the BG, for some reason I would prefer to see it either all on the flower or all in front of the BG, if that makes sense. Still, an enjoyable image. Thanks for sharing.

Wow colors Scott, the dahlia and bee share the frame very nicely.
The bee looks "sufficiently sharp" for this style of presentation, i.e. space around the flower/subjects.
Well done! :toast:

Scott - Absolutely magical. Just the Dahlia would make for a spectacular photo but now with the frozen in flight Bee, it makes the frame doubly spectacular !!. Great work.

Scott, nice job on this! The bee & the flower are really sharp and the background is blurred out enough to make the main subjects pop!

Beautiful detail in the flower, the bee could maybe be sharper but all the fine details are there to enjoy so it's not really a distraction. The image as a whole is stunning with lovely colors and a joyous presentation. I really like this.

Great image, the bee is plenty sharp enough for me. There is good detail within the flower, and I like the water droplet.

This image is a real delight, Scott. The blazing color is awesome, as is the percieved depth of the flower.
And I like this type of bg as well. The color and shapes add interest.

The colors in the flower are amazing. Great job catching the bee in it's landing pose. That water drop at the bottom is a great addition. The background works very well.
