Velvet Buck

This buck was very accommodating. In fact he was too accommodating. He walked right up to me. I was at the minimum focal length of 100 mm and I couldn't back up. So, he pretty much filled the frame. I took a bit off both sides. I liked this because it showed his velvet in detail. Critiques and comments welcome.

Quite a close-up! Nice detail in this portrait. I would like to see just a bit more space over his antlers, and the tree crossing behind him is distracting. However, considering your situation, with the buck coming right up to you I doubt there was much you could do about the tree in the BG. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Jerry,

Some days you can't get anywhere near wildlife, and other days you can't keep them outside your closest focus - hard to win in wildlife photography! But, that did give you very nice detail in the velvet, as you point out.

I agree with John that the diagonal branch does represent a significant distraction. The image does feel quite tight on the bottom to me...I'm wondering if a vertical capture (or crop if you have more room below in the original) might have worked a little better here?

Cheers...thanks for sharing this!
