I took this image in the Yukon, just outside of Kluane National Park. My dad and I had spotted two Grizzlies (this guy and an almost black one!) the day before. They had been digging up roots along a pullout. We woke up before sunrise to go look for them again. Luckily, we spotted them along the road, searching for food again. I quickly got the camera and lens resting on the car window and started to shoot. He was just starting to lift his head to catch our scent when I took this image.

I thought I'd keep some room on top because of the way he had lifted his head. I also needed to keep some room on the bottom to fit in his "virtual body". We thought about toning down the foliage brightness, but this is pretty close to how it was, and I liked the contrast with the bear.

After processing we noticed how similar this bear's look and pose was to the Grizzly cub from Alaska! They're facing opposite directions, so it's almost like a mirror! You can see what I mean here.

This is a superb photo showing the curious and pensive look of the eye.. And a frown or mouth of concern...adds to the drama. Nicely done.

The color, light and the look on the bears face are all very good. I might be tempted to crop some off the bottom of the image which would put more focus on the face of the bear.

You've got to be proud of this and the linked shot. Noses in the air and eyes in the direction of the photographer. For me the grasses in the foreground only add to his "just discovering" you.

Love the pose and the view through the lit grass here, Jenaya! The contrast you mentioned works well!
I would look at reducing the cyan-ish cast/sheen on his back, not sure it looked like that? (bearing in mind - excuse the pun - - that I have not seen a wild bear before)...
Overall, nicely done...

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Morkel, this is really close to RAW. Because he is a silvertip, his fur was reflecting the cooler shadows. Sorry for the misunderstanding! I actually thought the same thing during processing.

I like the peeking pose and the coloration of the image throughout Jenaya. The bright OOF vegetation in the FG bothers me though. Darkening that down selectively would reduce its impact a bit.

Jenaya, great job nailing the face clear of the vegetation. I agree that the bright foreground is a slight distraction, but for me the larger issue with it is that it's uneven with that "spike" right in the middle of the frame. I find myself ignoring the left half because the raised vegetation creates a sort of barrier. Makes me wonder if just the right side of this image would be more effective as a vertical composition. Hope that makes sense.

Cool shot - the Griz is sharp, but there's a bit too much oof fg for my tastes. That being said, I'm really enjoying your recent bear photos, so keep 'em coming!

Jenaya, this photo is IMHO precious! Spectacular capture, good choice of dof and very good detail on the bear. The oof foilage in the foreground doesn't bother me at all. You used this opportunity quite nicely. Oh yes, the most important distance was that between you and the bear, lol. Well done!
