Blaze

I don't think this photo really demonstrates much skill as a photog but I am proud I held it together to get it. 6 ft deep black water(real black), gator infested vacant lake, sunrise that hurts to look at it is so nice, and assembling ladder pod, in canoe after rushing to paddle out to location before the sky exploded.

With that said, I wish I had dropped the iso down to 50 for a water exposure so it was glassy.

5d3, 24 ts, 3 horizontals stacked, exposure blending, yada yada

That is some epic sunrise. Perfectly exposed with great range of colors. The comp is simple and effective.

Marvelous! Love the way you aligned the lines in the sky with the tree. Terrific reflection, too.

Love it, Paul! I really like how the clouds radiate out from the tree. Terrific image, and have to disgree about your assessment of skill to get this. "Ladder pod?"

Wow. Very nice image! So how did you use a tripod for this while in a canoe floating in deep water??

I want to see what the setup looks like for this...wtf...and iso 50 has a much smaller DR...better to stop down as you dont need water to be tack sharp as much anyway. Sick sky.

Excellent composition, colors & exposure. A top notch image.
I also would be interested in what your ladder pod setup is?

Thanks everyone! The ladder pod is a homemade tripod out of an extension ladder and some aluminum poles cut into sections. It was a quick piece together for this trip and will be refined in the future to have telescoping legs. It all fit in my 12" canoe but apart, so it took a while to get proficient at extending it, piecing it together, and not flipping. I just bought a Gitzo Giant, may just use that in the future and shoot from inside the canoe.

Glassy, schmassy. This is high impact and gorgeous. I love the clouds pinching to the horizon driving the eye past the tree. :toast:

Holy Cow!
Congrats on the "ladder pod." Often wish I had a tripod with 10 to 30-foot legs in my canoe, but it would be tough on the portages.
Re: the exposure time, I almost always would rather look at water than glass, so this is fine with me. Why detract from an amazing natural scene with a camera trick that calls attention to the photographer rather than the subject? With that in mind, I call this shot perfect.

Wow, what a sky! And then you filled the whole rest of the frame with a reflection of that sky. Excellent move. No, seriously, I think this is great. The colors literally explode, and the subject is interesting enough to hold it all together. :toast:

Love everything about this one, Paul. Has a wonderful surrealistic feel about it.

I am not sure how I feel about stepping into 6ft of black water in a gator infested lake.

DAMN, that's some nice light. Good work with the ladder pod setup. The composition is simple yet powerful and effective. Flawless handling of those reds - they'd have been super easy to overdo or blow in the wrong hands. I've only seen one sunrise 100% like this in my life, and it was also over water - but I didn't have any interesting trees to take it to the next level. You, sir, have done exactly that.

As stunning as the sunrise is, it's that solitary tree that makes the shot. Excellent composition and the post-processing is great...bringing just the right hint of detail into the tree. This is one the more memorable shots that I've seen in a while.
