Presque Isle Revisited

by Jon Daining

This is the first of some images from Presque Isle River in Michigan. I was excited to visit in autumn, and the colors did not disappoint. However, this series focuses on the rapids rather than the fall colors.

I had a tough time getting the composition that I wanted without getting too close. I left the 10-stop filter in the camera bag, using a small aperture and polarizing filter to achieve a longer shutter speed.

Thanks,

Jon

Wow, I absolutely love the top half! The combination of the puzzle like shapes and the motion of the water is just beautiful! I would definitely consider cropping out the bottom third, however, as it would improve the balance of shapes and abstract feel.

Jon, very nice flow from your spot on exposure! I very much like the continuance of the small canyon out of the image to the lower left.

I've never seen anything comparable to this of a waterfall image. I like it.
Very intimate

I imagine getting close to this subject might be difficult. This image really stands out to me, and you captured the flow perfectly. I also like the colors in this, as well as the shutter speed/processing. The lower right corner may be a bit distracting, but honestly it doesn't effect the comp too much. Thanks for the large version!

Fantastic composition and an ideal exposure. The intruding elements on the right definitely distract and I would clone although cropping works too.

Wonderful abstract qualities Jon. Excellent exposure choice. I tend to agree with Floris and Kah Kit on a crop of the lower 1/3 or cloning out of the rock in the LRC.

This looks great Jon, the composition is very strong. The lower right corner is a bit distracting, unfortunately. Perhaps some selective darkening can be used to make this part a bit less obvious.

An area I've been meaning to get to for the past two years.

Wonderful work Jon. I like this photo as presented, no alterations from me.

Nice work!

Beautifully sensual and intimate scene, Jon. The subtle light and the flow of water over the rocks stand out to me.

I agree that the "solid" elements in the lower right disrupt the scene, though I wouldn't crop. I'd carefully brush it out so that the full comp is maintained. This is really gorgeous and worth all the effort.

Excellent use of the polarizer. The water looks great. There are a few little rocks along the right edge that are distracting. There isn't enough of them to interesting. The lower part of the picture doesn't really add anything and seems to just be filling space. The visual interest is more in the upper part.

Thank you all for the feedback. Much appreciated. I will experiment with the right lower corner with cropping, cloning, and/or burning as this is a distraction for many (but not all). I also look forward to seeing how some different comps from this location are received.

Great comp Jon. Love the flow of energy around the shot. I agree the bottom right would be nice cloned out and the little bit along the right edge above the middle. A beautiful capture.
