Elephant Crossing

Hey,
This photo was taken in Lake Manyara National Park in northern Tanzania. This park isn’t savannah, it is primarily a forest, so the Elephants just seem to come out of nowhere, its amazing that an animal so large can hide so well. On this occasion a group of elephants popped out right next to us, and they were so close I couldn’t even fit the whole elephant in the photo. Minutes later a mother and baby walked within arms length of the vehicle. Just an amazing experience! Stay tuned for more photos!

What a lovely image, Cam! You sure made the most of the opportunity, and framed him up nicely considering how close you were. I love your composition! The only thing is, the oof vegetation in front of his trunk is slightly distracting IMO...very minor nit in an otherwise stellar image! Can't wait to see more, keep 'em coming!

I like this up-close view, although I agree with Jenaya that the oof vegetation is a little bit of a detraction. My eye is intrigued by reflections on the tucks and forehead.

Hi Cam,

Sounds like you had a great time - good for you (and I'm looking forward to seeing more shots).

Technically this shot looks really solid - exposure looks pretty much dead-on and it's certainly nice and sharp. I'm feeling a bit torn on the composition tho' - I do like how the close-up view shows the skin texture so well, but feel a bit teased on not seeing more of the tusks and the ear. And, my eye didn't really know where to go (the eye of the elephant didn't grab me enough to go there first). Given that this is full frame, if this were mine I would be tempted to go even tighter on the crop - with the thought of going towards a bit more of an abstract. BTW - I didn't notice the OOF vegetation untilmmy second look at the image, so it obviously wasn't too much of a distraction to me.

Cheers...

Brad
