The Devil's Eye

Interior of a sea cave on aptly named Devils Island on Lake Superior. I spent four days backcountry kayaking on Superior to get this shot. This is a hard place to get into, as illustrated by a recent blog post of mine called The Red Badge of Courage. No vicious beavers this time, but I did get a nasty cut on my leg. Had real nasty waves on my way back to the mainland the next morning after I shot this, almost made me wish I had skipped the caves and returned to the mainland when it was calm . . . almost.

The Red Badge of Courage. Love it, Ian, especially the tendrils of mist.

I feel your pain--my leg is similar right now since i impaled it yesterday on a cactus while hiking up a remote canyon in E CO
and taking the shot i will post either today or tomorrow.
Love the photo, cool comp and fascinating subject! Minor nit; wish the wave exposure up front were faster cause it looks more like white fur than water to me, although within the context of 'fine art' i think it works ok here. Maybe you saved some quicker takes for purists like me. Good work as always, Ian! :wavey:

Excellent Ian! For the first couple of views I thought these were reflections of clouds - then I clued in and decided this is rushing water? Maybe I'm missing this entirely! But no matter, I love the addition of the mystery white stuff at the bottom. The symmetry is wonderful - yet nothing is repeated or exact in it's symmetry. This is very cool, great find and beautifully crafted.

Interesting, wonderful layers and colors with a 'graphic illusion' quality. I find this image fascinating

Wonderful photo, Ian! Love the misty ethereal water, it makes the shot and makes you think. Definitely worth the pain!

At first glance I thought this was taken in Utah/Arizona! Lake Superior! Interesting, being originally from Toronto, Ontario. I have been up around Lake Superior, and never heard of this place.

 Capture!

Gorgeous Ian! Love the composition, color, and detail. We can always count on you for something original as well as beautiful, and that's the sign of a great shooter IMO.

Amazing!

The adventure sounds dangerous; glad cuts are repairable and that you're ok.

Great perspective and placement of the opening in the image. I like the white motion in the water, kindo f looks like something is flowing up from the depths, adds a bit of mystery to the image. Excellent shot! :toast:
