Autumn in Zion (Again)
by Jim Greenwood
Yes folks, it's that time once again, for my annual autumn Zion photography pilgrimage. Here's one from my first day, along a dry wash up on the east side where the bigtooth maples are peaking. I'm heading back up there today.

front left tree is nicely detailed. Of course, the color is the main attraction. Well done,
and I'm looking forward to more of your Zion postings.
Beautiful colors and comp.
I'm not as sure about the image as a whole, though. It's obvious that you were trying to do something a little different here than just fill the frame with vibrant color from the maples. The foreground pine is interesting - it looks like it is uprooting itself and about to walk down the empty creek bed...or maybe that's just my over-active imagination.
I guess that my honest opinion is that the composition seems to lack cohesiveness. I find myself drawn to the maples but the other elements don't hold my interest as much. Maybe this tension was intentional. It will be interesting to see what others say as I haven't read other comments yet.
As a side note, I have enjoyed seeing your work from Zion from previous years. You always have unique images from less frequently photographed locations in the park.
EDIT: After reading other comments I seem to be in the minority here.
Brian ... The wonderful tension is what drew me to this scene, and is what appeals to me most about the composition - the profusion of red bigtooth maples on the far bank, the pine trees and pine cones and pine needles on the near bank (and the distinct lack of maples on the near bank), separated by the rock strewn dry creek bed.
Admittedly I have a lot to learn about composition so I appreciate your thoughts.
