Fire Water

Warm water from hot springs forms these small rivulets which empty out into the Firehole River. The warm water is a perfect environment for bacteria to grow in many different colors such as you see here. Many of the bacteria in Yellowstone's hot springs have not yet been discovered or named. It amazes me that we can actually drive through active volcanic activity and witness such things.

I'm curious to know your thoughts on this image and would appreciate any feedback, and thank you for the great critiques I've received on my last image.

Fantastic Dean. The rivulets make a great lead in, and the ghostly trunks in the fog really attract the eye (in a good way). The lighting adds a lot to the effect of the image. My only nit is the blues, which seem a little strong. (Maybe it's just my eye, but when I get the saturation of the warmer colors of dawn even close to what I saw, the blues seem too strong.) It might be worth selectively backing them down a little, without reducing the saturation of the other colors.

Great work here. The color mix is outstanding, and the flow of water just brings me through the scene. I'm on the fence about keeping the brightest pink cloud at the top. My eye keeps heading up there due to the brightness. I think the other clouds are still strong enough that this area would not be missed if cropped. I hate to remove clouds too - we try so hard to find them in a comp. :toast:

I think it's a beautiful photo. I like the first version better. It's more dramatic. The bright pink clouds at the top are a little distracting but they add so much to the image that I would probably leave them as they are. I might try darkening them a bit, but the image is great as you presented it.

I'm on the fence as to which version I like best. I hate to give up any color in the sky but the bright pink clouds do bother me a bit. Perhaps the suggestion of darkening them a bit would work without he crop.

Hi dean, somehow I like the luminosity of the original -- i think the mood was somewhat more dark in those bg trees on the left. I really like the comp, with the line of water to the tall bare trees on one side and the shorter ones on the other. Agreed that the pink clouds on the very top might look nicer cropped. Nice work!

Dean,
I scrolled the photo up and essentially cropped off the top and like it much better. My crop would be just above the solid clouds on the right and eliminating the pink clouds at the very top. This is a very strong and dynamic image. I keep getting puled into the FG and trees. I like the original as it gives a greater sense of being lead into the underworld. Very nice capture.

Well composed with good lighting. I also like the water tracks serving as lead in lines.
The clouds and colors in the sky really are a plus. The mist surrounding the tree trunks
create a nice mood.

Very surreal Dean. But then again Yellowstone is a surreal place to start with. You captured some great mood and light in this image.

I tried cropping the top of the image but it seemed to take away some of the drama from the image so I left it in. I may try and darken it as some suggested.

The exposure for this image was 2 seconds causing softness in the background land and sky which I retained from the raw image. The only thing I sharpened was the foreground and middle ground areas. I also did not sharpen the rivulets. No Orton was applied.

Thanks for the C&C.

Ooh, I like this a lot Dean. Lots of color variation and the low fog/mist adds great mood. This has so many nice elements it's hard to pick just one as a favorite - they blend together very nicely.

This is a surreal scene, Dean. I love the mood here with the steam along with the mix of warm and cool colors in the sky. The diagonal rivlets of warm water make for some great lead in lines as they draw me into the scene. Excellent work.

I really like this surreal location. The fog makes this shot, but I agree with Gary that the top pink clouds could be cropped out. My reasoning is my eye is immediately drawn to the pink and then stopped. Once the pink is removed, my eye follows the foreground leading lines to the trees and then to the clouds. I'd be interested to see if your darker version helps.

The image conveys well the moody deathness of life near the hot springs. Count me in also as prefering the repost and a top crop.

Wonderful composition. The misty steam and colorful water channels under a dramatic sky is excellent. Clouds seem a little too blue for my tastes but I love the image as a whole (just saw the re-post...good work)

Outstanding as your other posts from this location... the cropped repost is a more perfect comp, but I can see why your original post included the top clouds

What a nice composition - geometry attracted me first 2 days ago, thought about formulating my comments. Interplay of shapes and colors is impressive, especially orange color in front reflections going against blues (which may be a bit too saturated).

As you asked, 2 tiny suggestions : left side is a bit cramped, if you could have trees and rivulet to not touch left border, it would help. Same with the pink cloud - it is attracting attention of the eye , contrasting with blue and echoing reflection, but it is not a formed shape. A bit of the blue above it would be wonderful or , alternatively, crop it out altogether.

Nice, really nice image.

Wonderful composition and lighting, Dean, the warm and cool contrast works nicely. I do agree with toning down the brightest clouds at the top, they're a bit of an eye catcher. The repost looks better with the slightly less saturated blues.. :toast:

Edit: just saw the second repost with the cropped sky. While I like it I kind of prefer the first repost with the clouds, perhaps just toning them down a bit would help..
