Harris's Hawk

I just spent a few days shooting at Santa Clara Ranch in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and I have to say the blinds and property there are great for photography. This image was taken in the elevated raptor blind, where food is provided for the resident Harris's Hawks.

Nikon D7000, Sigma 150-500 at 290mm, 1/1250 F8, iso 500, manual exposure, handheld.

I found that the 7D at 500mm (800mm effective focal length) was too much for this photo opportunity so I used this combo. I was impressed with it's ability to acquire and hold focus against this busy background. It's about 60% of the original image.

WOW Nate, did you do much post processing? This raptor really pops out with the BG. Killer shot. :toast:

He really has the brakes on and showing off those amazing feathers. Such a handsome species of hawk, you captured him very well. Can't suggest any real substantive changes that need to be made. :toast:

A great view of this awesome raptor alighting, excellent feather detail, nice wing spread and fanned tail. Great habitat too.

Great and stunning image - the first time I hear of 'rapture blinds'. Sounds like I must come over one day to Texas, since I have seen so many great images coming from this state on NPN.. But about your image: wonderful ! Compliments ! Cheers, Hans

Nate, perfect pose and light to show off that interesting plumage. The entire bird is sharp and set off well against the background. Nicely done.

Wow Nate. This is a great image. Perfect pose. Fantastic detail-especially the eye-but feathers are all nearly perfect. I like the soft colors in the background against the deep colors of the Harris. Glad Santa Clara was good to you.
