Rocks at the Rox RPs

This is the more traditional representation of Roxborough State Park, where the rocks are the stars. This cropped rather than stitched. In a perfect world everything would fit into the 3:2 orientation the camera designers ordained, I guess, but some scenes just need a different take. Like the other image, this is shot from a ridge across the park through a light rain.

Russ: Never been to this place in all my visits to Colorado. Marvelous scene superbly rendered. >=))>

Wonderful range of color Russ. Never been here either but it looks like it has some excellent color and rock forms.

Leaving out the sky works great here. Nice lines and textures.

I know this vantage point very well but the colors in the fg are quite nice here. My only nit is that the top feels a bit tight to me. With any luck you cropped the top  Nice take on Rox :wavey:

Beautiful, Russ. I agree with Stan about a little more at the top.

Another vote for more room on top...I like the patterns and colors.

Love the rock formations and colors Russ, quite different. Beautifully seen and presented.

Hey thanks folks. Actually, I shot this without any sky 'cause it was bright and featureless. Seems like I spent the whole day looking for opportunities to make an image without sky or hand of man. Gave up on both eventually, but shots that included sky were the biggest disappointment. It wasn't a brooding storm, just big, flat and consistently bright. I would have had to replace it in processing, which I just can't bring myself to do. However, this image has lots of foreground and Stan is right, it's colorful! Here's the image uncropped. Which now that I see it again, I kinda like too.

A great looking scene Russ. The landscape is really interesting and the colors are wonderful. It does feel just a tad tight up top for me, but still very nice!
edit: I kinda figured you had to eliminate the sky here because of that. Still it works quite well Russ. Now I see your repost and I like it with more foreground too.

I like the repost better--the fg is the way to go here. Just take off that sliver up top like you did in the original.

Repost works for me Russ. Maybe reduce the cyan in the top trees, but that's minor.

Thanks Stan, Nick and Joe. Maybe, at least in this case, those camera designers who set the 3:2 ration were right after all. Appreciate the feedback, and might even consider printing this one with the suggested changes. The detail is amazing. One of my favorite things about photography is a moment frozen in time that we can take in slowly after the fact. Great conversation, thanks!

Feels a little tight at the top, to me but your colors are wonderful and your orientation adds weight to the dramatic up-lift. Nicely done

Russell,

A fine image, fine landscape. I agree with you that a scene sometimes just needs a different format - and this works very well. Having said that and seeing your repost, I like that one just as much! Indeed the variety in the foreground of your original full frame, is quite lovely.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm still seeing light fall off - and it looks like more of the corners this time as opposed to just left/right. Kinda makes me thing you've got a polarizer and there's not enough image circle and you're getting some vignetting from a filter? Or maybe because you're wide open? Not sure, but I do see some fall off in the corners.

Still, another beauty from this local park.

Hey Lon, definitely getting some falloff in those corners. I had a polarizer with me, but don't think I used it on this image given the shutter speed and low ISO. Could be the lens wide open, I'm going to test it out and make sure that correction is built into my workflow for this lens. This repost is still a little dark in the lower corners but that is a unlucky coincidence of the scene, I think. Third times the charm I guess.

Some amazing colors here and I like the extra room on the bottom of the repost. I also wish there was a little more room on the top, but still nicely done. These rocks remind me of the Vasquez Formation here in So Cal.

Yeah, a wee bit tight at the top, so hopefully you have some to add back in there, but a beautiful rendition of this cool place. It's a personal preference, but I think you could warm up some of the blue in this, too. With a little more room at the top you will have to make a very large print of this as it has a nicely balance comp and mix of different rocks.

Well, I just scrolled down and saw your uncropped version. I like it with the addtional foregroun, too. Print it and hang it. Very well done.
