WC #561 - The Vigil

This scene evokes in me the impression of the strong and proud cottonwood in the background standing vigil over its fallen companion.

I posted this composition last year in the Landscape Gallery, taken from a vantage point at the opposite end of the fallen cottonwood and facing in the opposite direction, which is perhaps even more evocative of this notion.

This looks like the tree lying in my backyard after Hurricane Sandy. (Of course, it's not that dead looking though.) I really like the composition in this--the top portion has nicely colored trees and bushes against the red rock; the bottom portion has the nicely angled tree with the darker bark helping anchor the bottom right. I also like the pieces of bark/wood scattered around the tree. Great POV looking from the base of the fallen trunk. Nice shot, Jim!

Very nice. I like the angle of the cottonwood, and the colors in the rest of the scene. I prefer this image over your comparison image, probably because of the simplicity in this image, the lack of a dark competing tree, and the vertical rise of the rocks.

Neat look at the fallen cottonwood contrasted against the lovely colors in the rocks and distant trees.

Love it! I agree with your interpretation of a fallen comrade.
Perfect perspective, great colours and comp.
Congrats on a fine WP!
