Autumn Hillside
by Vance Gese
Want to thank everyone for the comments on the last image. Really appreciate it.
This is another image from the archives, of a hillside in the Matanuska Valley of Alaska one autumn several years ago. The diagonals of course drew me to this scene and the spruce trees seemed to be in just the right spot. Did crop this slightly to 1.5:1 ratio; seemed to work better. The autumn color in the Matanuska Valley was always an incredible experience; some years quite short lived but always a treat. Your thoughts and suggestions on this image would be much appreciated.
4x5, 360mm, Velvia, warm polarizer. M1 scan, Tony Kuyper's masking techniques.
Large size image attached as well.
Thanks.

14 commentsYour work is always inspirational and this one certainly is as well. I love the bold color and strong composition. Nice.
Great to see an image from you - this is outstanding! Bold, certainly as Youssef commented, and certainly beautifully composed and presented. The graphic contrast with the handful of standing evergreens really makes this composition work. We mention so often the Rule of Thirds, but I think this more closely matches the Golden ratio.... (google it folks...)
The only suggestion I have would be to clone out the pine in the very LRC. Not a big deal, but I think better without if you're going to print. Regardless Vance, this is a beauty!

This is a well thought out composure.
