Snowstorm Island

I am not normally a landscape photographer, but sometimes a scene stops me and I give it a go, and here is my hand held attempt, using a D3S and a 70-200. I am interested in hearing how the "earth, sea and sky" people suggest improvements! This is from a couple of days ago, here in the Black Hills of South Dakota, at the beginning of our first snow of the season.

Holy cow--a shot from Lon in ESS! I'm honored to be the first comment.
I love this, looks like an oasis in a storm. There's a fair amount of neg space in the urhc--maybe a tad too much, but overall im liking this a lot. :toast:

Lon I love the snow flakes frozen in the frame as they fall. Even though the negative space on the UR does cause an imbalance in the photo, its not a deal breaker and the other aspects of the photo compensate for it. Its actually quite nice to see this island of green trees among all that white. Well done.

Lon, This really made for a great winter scene. The larger version looks very nice!

Lon,

So glad you decided to pop in here with this awesome winter scene! The falling snow and your careful crop make for a beautiful and well crafted image. I've got no nits or suggestions for improvements.

For alternate thoughts, you could do b&w, increase the brights and go towards a high-key look? You could add a soft vignette? but honestly, this is a great winter scene as is.

Great to see more Lon images in Landscape!

Great comp Lon, no real nits from me other than on the large version there are 2 big snowflake blobs that are a little distracting, one just above the base of the fallen dead tree and one just right of center at the base of a small pine tree that I would clone out. Other than those, the large snowflakes add a nice texture to the scene.

This is really nice. I find that it is not always easy to capture falling snow but this is a success in every way. I really enjoy the large version. Nice work
