A Little Bit of Snow

Not much snow pack this yet this year but the little bit we got last week on this juniper made for interesting shapes. I"m thinking the vertical comp may feel a little cramped so I will post, also, a horizontal version. Let me know which you prefer (if either).

I much prefer the horizontal version - better light, better detail and gives a fuller sense of the expanse of the scene.
Well done!

I'm with the horizontal version, for all the reasons Sandy stated.

Ditto Sandy, and the snow looks a little gray on my monitor, so some whitening might be in order.

Nancy, Horizontal for me too...and for the same reasons! I also agree with Morris that the snow is just a bit gray, although in some light it does seem to appear that way. Anyways, I think a bit whiter might work well. I do enjoy the wintry feel of this!

I vote for the horizontal. I also think the image is too gray overall. I would consider adding just a tad of blue/cyan just to give it a little bit of chilling personality.

Me too. Definitely the horizontal. In the vertical, I am a bit overwhelmed by the foreground. The horizontal gives a real nice balance and sense of place.

I'll make it unanimous  Nice shot!
One gripe: I think you should have either a) gone with a real shallow dof so the bg is totally blurred, or b) use a small aperture or focus stack so the bg is in good focus. As it stands the little bit of bg blur makes me uncomfortable. That and the pizza i ate a couple hours ago...

Definitely have to go with the horizontal Nancy, as Harley mentioned, it gives it balance. Pretty snow scene.

I'll join the chorus for preference of the horizontal. Nice form in those snow pillows. Sweet!

Beautiful images Nancy and here's another vote for the horizontal. It's the light and sky that I prefer.

Nancy Lea,

I'll be a little different and say clearly the horizontal is a better image. The original has a few issues I think. Compositionally, the foreground blocks the rest of the scene and doesn't hold enough interest to be the main subject. Technically as well the background looks soft, assuming you don't have enough dof field here.

However, all that goes away with the wider horizontal. The foreground IS more interesting because it shows repeating patterns, form, etc. and yet feels part of the landscape instead of blocking it. Also introduced in the wider view - color! The soft color and atmosphere are very nice in this one. Huge difference between the two, thanks for posting both!

I really like the original post. It has a nice "old timey" feeling and the layering from the snow covered shrubs, the tall trees, the distant hillside, and then the sky works very well.

The horizontal comp works much better IMO the snow however feels a little grey.
