Paint Mines

Finally got some time on a day that had the chance of some decent light. So, I took the short drive to the Paint Mines near Calhan, Colorado this afternoon. I need a few more trips to fully know the place 'cause I think it has real possibilities. The larger version has better detail, of course. This is the first take. Let's see how it goes.

Nikon D600, 24-70 Nikkor at 24mm, 1/13 at f8, ISO 200 with some Lightroom work.

C&Cs always welcome.

Wow, you got a great sky and some fine eye-popping color. This one requires a look at the large version to fully appreciate it. Well done.

I've been looking at this trying to think of what to say about it aside from the fact I don't like the frame which is completely irrelevant, and I agree with the comments already posted. In addition, I notice the bands on the rocks and they imply to me a time long gone bye where perhaps once great seas were present, leaving their high water marks.

They are now gone, but the rocks remain, for now at least; all of it a testimony to everything is constantly changing and now nothing, even the rocks and mountains, are exempt from the ravages of time, as beautiful as it may be.

Got to look at the larger version! The colors and lines in the rocks leading to that awesome sky really work in my opinion. TFS

The large version is especially nice. This place is uniuqe treasure for sure. We'll have to meet up for a sunrise shoot sometime, and get Stan to meet us maybe. I like the comp a lot and your pp makes for a beautiful image.

Doesn't look like Colorado, but then again, CO is full of surprises! Nice find, both comp-wise and location-wise. I really enjoying searching the frame, finding little details to stop and admire. As said before, the pp is great---not too much, not too little. The purple is quite a wild thing to see in rocks. IMO, there may be a bit of interesting stuff going on in the sky. All of the blues are different, one more cyan, one more purple, one regular blue. Of course the fires may be playing a part in this, so I can't say much. Really enjoyed this one!

Russell,

What a dynamic combination of sky and land. In fact, I might even say that they don't seem to belong together - almost as if the sky is a composite from a different place and time. I don't think that's a negative here, just an observation. Speaking of the sky, just the way the clouds are lined up gives the impression of a slanted horizon, but that's just me.

I think all these elements including the story of time, the erosion, the colors all combine for a very engaging landscape. Interesting, dynamic and even unique.

A real beauty Russ. I like the color in the banding but it's the energy form the comp and image elements that really appeal to me. I guess I'll have to head this way at some point.

Lots of rich color, and the depth leading out the back gives it a nice openness.

That's sweet. Just love the colors, texture, and light here. You really got a good sky to go with this.

Thanks folks. Yup Lon, I kept checking the virtual horizon in my viewfinder 'cause it didn't look level. The camera was level but this is one of those situation where it probably shouldn't have been. In the old days I just looked through the viewfinder and did what looked right, now I am compelled by the tyranny of technology. Is there a 12 step program for that? Anyhow, I have another image taken near this spot 30 minutes later that I might post tonight.
