White Paint

I assume the Paint Mines are most commonly known for magenta rock, so this is a bit of a different take. The white balance was tricky, given the mix of shade and direct sun. I decided to leave the shadows cool as I liked the contrast with the warm scene above.

Lately, my images seem to taste more like the Waffle House than The French Laundry. Functional and will keep body and soul together, but not that special. This little venture to a really cool place was supposed to be get me out of a rut. So, what do you think, Waffle House or something else?

I think the interesting shapes and color contrasts make this image. I like the little bit of blue sky at the top of the image to add some more color.

Russ,

I like this but I prefer and really liked the first. I don't see anything wrong with the comp here but the sky, light, color and energy in the comp of the first make it a much stronger image for me. I'd actually be curious about this with more emphasis on just the white. You'd lose the layers... so I don't know.

I guess for me the first was definitely the French Laundry and this is possibly just the Waffle House. Although, I like waffles and pancakes. (smile)

Russell,

I love this! The combination of light, color, contrasts and the transition between warm and cool is wonderful in this image. Add to that the fascinating geology and nature story and I give this one a big thumbs up. Processing, excellent.

As far as restaurants go, this is far beyond the WaffleHouse or even IHOP - I'd take this all the way to Olive Garden if I were eating out.

Thanks everyone. There is a lot working in this image with the multiple layers, color, lines and shapes. I wondered if it was too much for one frame. But then I decided that it was all those elements that actually made the image rather than competing within it. Just for comparison purposes, here is a simplified composition.

There really are endless possibilities at this place, Russ. You will come to be fascinated more with each visit. Nice comp (I could see losing the foreground), and your pp looks good for color and light. And, Pat summed up my impressions perfectly, especially the part about liking waffles.

Russ,

Just got back from this park. It was cold, windy and I basically wimped out and headed back to the car without having gotten anything I wanted to work. I think you have a good eye to have seen any of these. Although the first is still my favorite.

I plan to shoot here again.

Thanks Pat, yup, I think this is the kind of place one could visit many times and not see the same thing twice. The time of year, weather and time of day all seem to make dramatic changes to the place. I was the only person the entire time I was there on day I visited. I needed and really appreciated the solitude. I'll be back too.
