Pannonian Frost

I took this image today at dusk in the Pannonian Steppes at the shore of Lake Neusiedl, in the eastern part of Austria. We had some frosty nights in this region together with an icy wind. During this time of the year I appreciate the almost complete silence in this place, only now and then interrupted by the crack of breaking ice.

Can't wait for local over here lakes to freeze over with good formations! Good image, as I can 'see' the silence. I also love the cracking of ice, and the sounds it makes. It seems in the dead of winter things can get eerily quiet sometimes...

I wouldn't say this stands up to some of your images, but do like the mood here. TFS!

Peter, This is wonderful! I love the light and feel of this image a lot. It has a cold and quiet mood that I really enjoy. Looking at this makes me feel like I'm standing there seeing this for myself. The colors are beautiful and so natural. I could see a crop of a little of the bottom, maybe just above the lowest piece of grass that is laying down on the ice or somewhere around there. Looks great as is too. For me this is really an excellent photograph! :toast:

Looks cold. I like the light on the reeds and the crunchy texture of the snow and ice. Beautiful contrasts.

The first thing I though of when I saw this was the sound of cracking ice...so I guess your vision really came through...Really like the light and the sky. TFS

Nice comp with the contrasting colors. It's an effective scene, though it would be more special with a more colorful sky.

Very nice image Peter. I like the subtle light in the sky and snow on top of the ice. Looking at this image makes me feel cold!

Wonderful shot Peter, looks like I missed out on perfect conditions. This conveys "cold" very well. I like the contrast of colors very much and the sense of distance and infinity!

Peter,

Can you say frickin' cold? I can almost hear, and certainly imagine the cracking ice, I've heard it before and it's kinda spooky actually.

Sure wish you had some sweet golden light on the reeds, but I guess you can't have everything. Nice image, sure tells a good story too.

I like this, Peter. The limited inclusion of the grasses creates lots of drama, contrast, and depth.

A very nice comp and you have conveyed the cold very well, too.
