Duck! No, Marsh Wren.

No time like a dark, winter afternoon to process some summer shots.

Taken from my kayak in a currently ice-covered bay near my home.

Nikon D300; 500mm; f8@ 1/800th; ISO 400; HH; approx. 45% crop.

Not a good shot technically (wish I had used a faster shutter speed), but an uncommon view of this species, I think.

All comments and suggestions most welcome.

Neat! Something I've never seen in a photo. I've got no issue with the shutter speed used here.

Super!
I think the shutter speed is perfect, it gave motion to the photo! It is different than other birds' still photos. For me, the main thing are the eyes. They should sharp, and you have them indeed sharp.
Great photo!

The wings motion is perfect and adds to the drama. The most important is that the eyes are in focus. Fabulous shot of a Marsh Wren ! :toast:

Nothing wrong with the motion being shown. You got the important parts sharp. :toast:

this is great! definitely a unique shot. shutter speed works well for me--I like the blur in the wings to go with the sharp head/feet. very cool.

SS is fine if you were going for wing blur and motion in the wings. Really portrays nice motion and the parts of the birds that need to be sharp are sharp, so this working nicely. I like the habitat too. Well done.

No doubt about his flying fast. Great shot.

Very interesting image, Tom. I also think the slower shutter speed makes this image unique. I really like how you got the head sharp. I always hear them, but they are too fast for me to photograph.

For comp, I think going vertical may be an option given the lay of the reeds.

Quite a different perspective from the usual. Looks like he is on the attack. The green reedy BG is very nice.
