Winter apparition

Gallery: LandscapePosted January 1, 2013218 views14 comments
Montana, first snowstorm near Glacier NP. Photographed in a very heavy snow

I am partial to this style, though it may not stand out in thumbnail view.

Idea was not fully mine (thank you Marc for the concept), execution and processing i had done with 5D M3, 70-200L and Photoshop.

1/125s, f/4, 200mm, ISO400.

Any insights/suggestions/feedback are very welcome. Thank you and Happy New Year.

The yellow leaves in the center look like an apparition Vlad. I love this abstract, creative view. Fantastic work.

I love the impressionistic feel to this. Very well conceived, no matter how you got the inspiration, and executed. It really does have a very artistic feel to it. Did I say I like it? Well, I do.

Vlad, Even the thumbnail view was intriguing and I really like this image. It is a lesson in restraint and almost haunting in its beauty.
I like what you have done here!!! Chet.

This is fantastic, Vlad. I'm not often moved to comment on an image but this one certainly made an impact. Just beautiful.

The snow reduces this to impressionism. Just enough detail to keep interest throughout. Very well done!

The effect is very cool! I have one suggestion--and i know how hard it is to crop (i hate having to) but i think there's a strong case to be made here that the main focus (the yellow leaves) is too centered here. I would crop the bottom 1/4 so the yellow is more in a thirds position. Comp trumps extra pixels (gotta make that a mantra: comp trumps pixels, comp trumps pixels  )

Thanks Stan, that's had been a hard task. Bottom grasses create frame for me and top contains pattern of branches.. I am with you on the placement of yellow, though, let me experiment more. Thanks!

I like such images and this one works very well for me. The branches in the bg add some nice (and perhaps needed?) structure.

I'm in LOVE with this Vlad. Beautiful abstract. I do think in this particular case, the colorful leaves might look better if centered, but that's just personal preference.

Vlad,

This is simply outstanding! What a exquisite capture of this scene and the dense falling snow. Just beautiful.

I think Stan is on to something with the crop suggestion. But I'll add that I think you have 3 options. 1., leave it as is, works beautifully, here the "subject matter trumps the comp." 2. crop from the bottom as Stan suggested. The tree top structure is wonderful and takes the leaves off center and 3. a similar crop from the top, which still includes some branches, but features the subtle grasses at the bottom, which I may just favor a little bit over the 3 options.

No matter how you slice this one, the great news is that you're starting with a beautiful image.

Lon

Love it! This image makes me want to keep looking for visual clues, much as you would have to do in a heavy snowfall.

This one is outstanding Vlad! Definitely one of the most interesting images I've seen in a long time. I would love to see this one as a big print on the wall. There is so much to look at here.
