Ferruginious Hawk

A nice way to start the new year, with a trip to the grasslands in the central part of the state. As always, they were chock full of raptors, including a number of Ferruginous Hawks. In a state where raptors are incredibly wary and tough to approach at times, these guys often seem downright curious and let you get ridiculously close. Fun to watch them at close range, as well as photograph them.

Canon 50D, 400 5.6L, ISO 400, 1/3200, F7.1.

sweet bird, Terry. nice light and setting, and he even picked a nicely weathered post.

A great shot to start the new year with, and you have controlled the depth of field well and left us with a nicely out of focus background. If I do have a criticism it is that critical focus is on the body of the bird rather than the head. Not to any great extent, a selective pass of USM on the head should be sufficient to sort it out.

An excellent looking bird and I love the talons on that weathered perch which matches the birds feathers beautifully. Nice soft BG with gradual changes as well.

Please direct some of those ridiculously curious birds to NC. That eye really captures the viewer. Well done Terry

I really like the soft warmth of the background it does an excellent job presenting the hawk. The claw pose adds uniqueness to the image. Fine exposure on the body to keep details.
