Bosque del Apache, 1/1/13

12 degrees at 7 am, and the cranes had to peck their way out of the ice encasing their legs after standing in sub-zero weather and ice water all night. I honestly don't know how they survive this, night after night.

Note the residual ice collar around each leg.

Definitely should be viewed large. Sharp details and excellent timing. Love that detail of the ice rings on the legs. Sweet light.

Very cool shot (no pun intended). When you get a capture like this I guess it makes the frozen fingers worth it. :toast:

Sandy: A very nice capture of the ankle bracelets that happen at the refuge. I would have enjoyed coming down to the refuge and shooting with you, but I was out of town. Nice image.

Totally amazing. And hand held in that much cold! I would have been shivering more than any IS system could compensate for.
