Tufted Titmouse

Spent a little time near the feeder with small birds. A lot of activity and nothing holds still for more than a few seconds. Not many of these around so when this one landed I quickly got off a few frames before he flew. Never came back to the perch, but went directly to the feeder for the rest of the afternoon. I set up about 20-25 feet away in a blind so that I wasn't a threat.

The background is browned out grass and spruce trees. Most of the snow is gone from the hillside but still on the flat ground. I was surprised to see that there was a little vigneting with the 2X and the tube. Slight crop from the top and left to get rid of the shadow.

400 2.8 W/2XII and a 25mm tube.
ISO 250
1/1000 @f6.3

Thoughts, comments, and critiques are appreciated.

Thanks for looking.

Exceptional image! Gret pose with the look back at you, fine detail, and an interesting perch. Wish the tail was also in focus, but still a fine image.

Nice job Jerry. Awesome background for this bird. My lone wish, a little more dof for the tail. I haven't used extension tubes, do you still have autofocus when they are in place? Thought I heard somewhere that no autofocus...or is that just a Nikon problem?

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. I appreciate it. I too wish the tail was a little sharper.

Gary, auto focus does work. The max aperature is 5.6 with a 2x and auto focus works at that f stop. Depth is a little shallow and camera movement is amplified. You get the most magnification with the tube attached to the body and the converter to the tube. Lots of light helps.

Good reaction to get this titmouse as they do not sit still for very long, I have yet to get a good picture of one. I like the contrast between bird and background plus you have some nice detail in the larger image, way to go.
