Slot Canyon Yin-Yang

This is an image from a recent outing to a nearby slot canyon. It's near the entrance and was my most interesting image from the trip. I was experimenting with an 812® enhancing filter, which bumps up the red and blue. I've been impressed what it's done for a couple of Guy Tal's images, and wanted to give it a try. Not totally sure yet if I like the results as it's quite a departure from reality. Thought I'd get the opinions of some friends.

Nikon FM2, zoom lens, 812® enhancing filter, PS.

Way cool, Tony. Given the light, it's hard to tell you used a gimmick filter

Great curve, great comp. My only nit is that I would burn down that URC. It's pulling a little too much of my attention.

Great work as always.

This one is a beauty. The composition draws you right into the shot and the light brings out all the wonderful details of the rocks. The colors are fantastic. I can't tell you used a filter either. And I agree with Michael that the bright top right corner is mildly distracting. But still, this is a great shot!

I agree, that is gorgeous! :toast: That would look so cool on a great big print. I don't know what it looks like, but it seems fluid-like.

It sure does look red & blue to me. Just think, someday soon, after the relase of Photoshop v12.5 you'll think back to the time when filters went on cameras instead of in a software menu.

Wonderful capture.

- though I'm not clear why you didn't post directions and GPS coordinates along w/ the other technical data? :jump:

I didn't think photographers actually made it to Mars yet  Completely awesome image, this would go on my wall if it were mine.

Beautiful shot! The lines and textures seem more important to me than the colors.

Wow Tony, this turned out incredible! For those who don't realize it, I was standing nearby when Tony was composing it and couldn't for the life of me figure out what he was looking at until he let me peer through the finder. To me that's one of the best things about exploring a scene with a fellow photographer - you always learn something new.
The transition from violet to blue to red is beautiful here.

Nice sweeping curve, looked like a stream running through it from the thumbnail. I agree that the TR corner is a little hot.

Tony:

Incredible image. I am not usually a big fan of slot canyon images, but this is a definite exception. I really like the line of the canyon, the textures that show in the rock, and the colors in the image. I especially like the repeating curves upward from the rock.

Tony,

A well seen scene  . But I will bet, if you exhibit this image, you will be asked "are those colors real?" I like it though, the transition for viloet to red is very neat.

This is a killer shot!

This really looks like another planet...there are unbeliavable places on the earth...or is this the dream world?

Kudos

I like it, too. The colors look a little too strong to me. However, the composition is very nice and in general I like the scene. Very well spotted, if even Guy didn't see it at first!

I didn't realize the Tiffen 812 enhanced colors that much. I thought it was just an 81A with a touch of magenta (so it would take out a little blue, but enhance reds). Shows how much I know.

This looks so different from the 'cliched' slot canyon shot. Fresh viewpoint, wonderful colour palette, simple yet effective composition... what is not to like???

That is the best slot canyon photo I have seen the past 5 years.
Thanks for posting.

I have to agree with Darwin here Tony - a completely fresh view and wonderfully composed. The colours are intense but still look reasonably plausible.

Tony, a very intriguing image. Did you make any without the enhancing filter. It would be interesting to see the comparison.

Thanks.

Joe.

This image would be fabulous in any color - or just black and white. The place is so compelling. I have looked at lots of gorgeous photos of slot canyons - and I just visited Antelope Canyon, Wire Pass, Buckskin Gulch, Face and Labyrinth Canyons and the Zion Narrows a few months ago - and I've never seen a view even similar. It is probably because the sand level is probably very high - i.e. the bottom of the rock could be 50 to 100 feet lower - so the scalloped lip of the canyon is more "ruffled" than usual and the side is more sloped (above the thin slot?) Please let me know if you know more about the actual profile of the rock below the sand as I am interested in the geology. This is a truly unique and memorable image. Thank you.

Oh blimey, I just shot the exact same composition a few days ago out at ( K C ). I'll keep my shot offline.
I love the way you processed this and Yin Yang is a fine title.
