Iced Apricot

After last year's winter, it's hard to say what out-of-season weather means. This ice covered bud on my Japanese Apricot (Prunus japonica) was taken on Jan. 21, 2012 after a freezing rain event. At that time, there were also blooms that had been fully open for 2-3 weeks that were killed by the freeze. This is a 5 shot stack that's very similar to a single f/20 frame that I posted in Flora a year ago (here). (5D, 100mm macro, f/11, 1/4s, iso 200, tripod and cable release)

Great shot, Mark, and perfect for the theme. I really like your simple comp and the wonderful detail in the bud from your stacking. The water droplets (frozen?) add extra interesting details to the bud. Freezing rain, while damaging, can provide an opportunity for many interesting and unique photos such as this one. Hey, it helps to look for the good in the bad, right?

I always enjoy ice storm macros, but mine are always just frozen twigs. This delicate softness of this colorful bud adds a new dimension. The stack and background worked well, and I like the way your exposure shows the "glow" in the ice.
