This Muscovy must have thought I had a snack, cause she was swimming for all she was worth straight toward me. That continuous focus really works. I was sitting on the ground with my knees bent, elbows perched on both knees, hand holding my 7D and 500 mm lens. That's the only way I can do it without a tripod.

7D * 500mm F/4L IS (800mm including crop factor)
ISO 400 * F/11 * 1/800 sec

Comments welcomed. Thanks for looking:wavey:

Nice capture. You made even this gnarly bird look good.

Well caught, with a good angle. The large image looks just a bit over sharpened. Or it may be just the contrast in the harsh light. The highlights look good, but there is not a lot of detail in the shadows. There is a bit of haloing on the upper feathers on the right side. Good work, handholding that big honker 500! :toast:

Really love the eye of the bird and the head angle in this shot! The image does appear to be over sharpened a bit. I would wish for a more pleasing background, as well. Regardless, you have done a nice job with such (dare I say it?) an ugly bird.

Okay I went back to the beginning of the Muscovy image (no edits applies) and was surprised to see there was a halo on the feathers on the right. I redid the image. So this begs some questions.
* Why was there a halo on just that part of the image before edits? Could it have just been a lighter ripple in the water?
* There were no halos on other parts of the original posted image, so maybe the mentioned halo was not because of over sharpening?
* To correct it, I had to clone darker pixels over the white strip.

Would appreciate any other ideas from the knowledgable NPN audience
