Kestrel on a Wire

A nemesis of mine for years. Usually I can't get within 100 yards without these birds heading out of range.

So despite the unnatural perch, I was pleased to get this shot last week.

Nikon D300; 500mm; f 7.1 @ 1/2000th; ISO 320; 50% crop from vehicle.

All comments and suggestions most welcome.

Well caught! Birds, especially raptors are notional; sometimes they will let you get quite close and shoot a number of frames. Usually it is the juveniles that allow this.

Looking at the larger view, the head appears just a bit soft, as if the POF was more on the body.

The only one I have is on a wire too, but yours is better. Nice catch and pose with great eye contact.

Real nice details and colors on your Kestrel. Perch not ideal, but....still a really nice look at this handsome bird. Sharon

Nice feather detail, color, and sharpness. I agree these are difficult to get close to. Good shot.
