Frost Fog and Ferns

Taken yesterday afternoon.

Zeiss 100mm with Nikon d800e at F20 and about 1/4 sec or so. ISO 100.

I love details and this has it in the foreground as it is over 12,000 pixels wide...multi frame. I don't think the comp is worth the effort to print and hang as a 6 footer. Another day and another comp. Fun hunting!

COMMENTS: thanks for the critiques on cropping and the log. I like the top portion b/g of the misty blue frosted forest...blurred and such... it contrasts nicely the warmer green yellow tones of the fern...and 'sets the mood'...as Phil says. You never know whether something will grow on you and make you wish that another angle might have been worth trying...or in this case, to go have pulled that log back away from centered dominance. (next time!)

You are exactly right...the details in the foreground are awesome. I really like the dim light & dusky colors. I think if you cropped it into more of a pano shape...by eliminating everything from just below the big stick up I think this would be really tight.

Ken: This is at once foreboding and inviting. For me this is all about the FG ferns so I would also commend a crop from the top. Well seen and superbly captured.>=))>

Superb range of tones, Ken - the lighter areas draw the eye through the image so beautifully !

The large image is a must see! Lovely, lovely detail. I wouldn't refuse a 6 foot print of this! I'm not sure of a crop, as the background sets the mood. I may be in a minority, but I would leave enough of that misty gray scenery to at least leave the eye a place to stop. I like it well as is! Really superb! :toast:

Hi Ken :wavey: I agree with Philip, no crop for the BG., It's perfect .. You captured the patterns of detail and texture of the Ferns wonderfully well , thinking out loud, pushing that fallen log further back, could have made an other interesting scene

Ken, it's very difficult for me to comment this photo. I know your love for crisp details and I think you like the photo as it is; but the log seems something there by chance, it doesn't belong to the beautiful ferns. I think that you should go back to this moody place.
Take care.

I expect a dinosaur to pop up in background any minute! The colors and details in the ferns are fabulous and I like the soft/foggy background and the lighting on the ferns. It would be nice not to have the broken branch on the left...next time.

Ken:

The details of the fern and the color are over the top. :toast: No too keen about the log though - a bit like a large pimple on a sweet face.
