World Of Wonder

Going through some of my old files I came across this one from Glacier taken back in 2010 and decided to process it. Some of the highlights in the sky were blown but I was able to recover them (thank goodness for RAW).

I still remember driving over the Going-to-the-Sun road that evening after a heavy downpour. The skies were beginning to slowly clear and the amount of fog was unbelievable.

For those interested this image was triple processed from a single RAW file, hand blended in PS, and then converted to B&W using various techniques of mine. Some color toning was applied to enhance the mood.

As usual please have a look at the LARGER version for better detail. Thanks for any comments!

I like this a lot, Zack. This evokes a mysterious mood. I like your processing as well as you've managed to capture a broad range of tones in this image. The B&W presentation is perfect for this.

This is awesome Zack. The mood and atmosphere you have here is incredible! B/w conversion looks great. No nits from me.

LR4 and ACR do an amazing job recovering highlights from raw files. I'm constantly amazed by the power of the most recent raw processing applications.

I like the diagonals and how it feels like the light is tumbling into the central valley by way of the clouds and how the spires of trees on the left and then along the right sides stand in contrast to that dynamic, and then the flora in the foreground.

The fundamentally monochrome aspect is very nicely complemented by the very, very subtle green tone that runs on a diagonal from over on the left down towards the center right, especially nice in the larger version, a reminder of the underlying reality and in a way making the monochrome stronger by contrast, I think.

It's like a natural cathedral.

One very minor "nit-pick", in addition to the mountain shaped signature area which, I think, kind of detracts from the otherwise sense of majestic, pristine beauty profoundly independent of human perception, are the small bright spots over in that lower right corner; two brigher and one less bright, but all three distracting and unnecessary, in my opinion. I'd suggest getting rid of those and reducing the luminosity of what you have going on over there in the lower right in general.

Very ethereal and a fantastic B&W Zack. Kind of reminds me of scenes I have seen in Alaska back in the early '80's.

Your processing all looks very good. It carries a mood, has good light and is well composed. Very fine image to pull from your archives.

What a phenom comp, esp given dynamic conditions of fog and mist. My eye is led perfectly to Tue center of the frame. B&w seems perfect here, I can't think of any improvement. Nice job! :wavey:

Very moody with your processing and the conditions. I might try increasing the sky contrast a hair, selectively of course. Might add a more 3-D feel to the image. Reeally cool. :toast:

This works very nicely, Zack. Really like the layering and how the edges define the scene.

This is a real treasure you retrieved from the files Zack. The moodiness of the foggy conditions and glimpses of peaks in the background are truly great and true to the alpine experience. :toast: Chet

This is a terrific scene. the fog makes it otherworldly and the mood is pretty intense. I love your choice of b&w, works so well here.

I love fog shots, this is no exception. Im tempted to say maybe too much is hidden--but the mix of bright and dark spots here is interesting.

Thanks for all the comments on this one everyone! I can't believe I hadn't processed this sooner, it's funny what you overlook at the time but then see it in a different light at a different point in time, in this case 2 years later..

John, many thanks for the suggestion about toning down the bright rocks in the FG, that little thing helped a lot in my opinion.
