What You Lookin' At?

Hey everyone! I thought I'd post a Great Grey Owl image that we just processed. I know Great Greys are really big owls, but this guy seemed big even for a grey! In case some of you are wondering why he is more brown than grey, for some reason a lot of the great greys around here are more brownish. I really liked this one because of his head turn. I thought it was an interesting pose instead of the usual straight on look. This was the last light after the sun had set.

Thanks for looking! :wavey:

Nikon D300
Nikkor 200-400 f/4 ED VR
ISO 500
1/160sec @ f/4
exposure comp set to -0.3 to control highlights
cloned out distracting branches at bottom of the frame
corrected camera tilt with slight rotation
full frame

This is a really stunning image Jenaya. I love everything that you have captured here including the comp. pose, head turn, feather detail and OOF BG. I'm sure this will look even better printed and framed. Congrats on a fine capture!

What a beauty, Jenaya. It must be a thrill to be in the presence of such a creature. Nice work on the depth of field. I do wish the perch was a little more natural, but not really that noticeable as the Owl is so prevalent. :toast:

I like that you included the knot in the bottom of the post and the way it draws my eye. The bird is stunning. Excellent work! Sharon

Excellent image - love the had-turn and nice view of the back. Great eyes and detail, and good BG.
The perch is not "ideal" but not a problem at all.

Jenaya: This is really sweet. That head turn is ideal to provide a great look at the face and have the view of that beautiful back. Extremely nice.

Very nice. I love the head turn and the cool background. My only nit would be for a bit more room on the top and sides if you have it.

Beautiful, Jenaya. Excellent detail in the owl's plumage with a lovely bg and I even like the grain patterns in the fence post.

Very interesting photo with great detail, soft bokeh, and good light. Just a solid photo in all respects. Moving the histogram to the black scale just a tad might provide a lift in the detail and color. Well done!!
