Alone on the River

by Jack Maloney

Gallery: Man & NaturePosted January 25, 2013191 views15 comments
This was taken in December when there was some color left on the trees. Cape Horn is a well photographed location but the lone boat gliding down the river really made the moment for me.

This is two images manually blended together along with several of TK's luminosity masks.

All and any feedback is greatly welcomed!

Tech: Cannon 5DMKII, 16mm, F8, ISO 100.

Beautiful image. I really love the middle ground on the left side.

One of my favorite spots. Usually wait for the boats to be gone but definitely adds to the mood here. Nice blend and tones. Well done.

Wow, Jack. That is an impressive scene and image. I agree that the boat and its wake add interest. Nice one.

I love that there is so much to see in this photo...the color, the comp are all well done. I have to agree that the boat really adds a spark of interest to the scene.

I agree with the others that this is pretty, but..... there are some things that bothered me a little bit. I can see some dark outlines on the mountains. You probably started out with a pretty dark image, and the work you did was good, but you can still see quite a bit of change between the darkness along the tops of the mountains and the brightness of the green pasture and the river. For me, I would rather not be able to see that a blend of images was done, but others may feel fine with it.
The other thing I pondered over for quite awhile, trying to decide if it bothered me or not, is that clump of grass in the FG on the left side. For me, and it's obviously a personal thing, that grass and post is so different from the lush foliage of the rest of the image that it sticks out a little too much. The others didnt' comment on it, so they must like it as is. Would it change if it was just a bit darker? Maybe. You might not be able to get a photo without that grass in it, either, I understand.
Also, for me, there's just a touch too much sky. I like it cropped off right at the top of the main part of the cloud on the right side. Love the colors throughout the sky.
This is really a beautiful image, right on the verge of being iconic, I think, and yes, that boat has a big impact. It's the kind of image that people will really notice if they have ever been to that spot. :toast:

Fine capture. My only suggestion at the time you snapped the shot is to NOT include the partial fense post that is in the bottom left-hand corner.

Jack,

The boat's wake really makes image. Sure looks like a beautiful locale. I just noticed the fence post and wish there was more of it. It's one of those situations where you either need more of something, or none at all. Still, the post and grass in the LLC helps to bring some depth to the scene.

Beautiful scene, I think some of the blending could be adjusted because you can see it. Most importantly is the lower left corner, i would crop the fence post altogether, it is distracting.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback. This was a tough image to blend because the dynamic range was so great. But I'm sure I could have done a better job so I'll keep working on it. As far as that fence post... I included it in the shot because I thought it anchored the image. I could have added more of it or removed it all together, I went back an forthon it several times. This location is only 15 minutes from my house so I'll be going back again to give it another try and taking all your suggestions into account.

THANKS Again!!!

When I put my hand over the bottom left hand corner, this is just a gorgeous image! Like a fairytale scene...from what you say, I understand that it IS possible to take this shot without the grass and post, in which case: go for it!
