Wild Fires in Los Angeles, California area, November 2008. We where staying at a rental house in Huntington Beach that was just below the down hill crest to the Pacific Ocean which made for a very interesting situation. For several days the inshore winds keep he smoke from the fires blowing east which made our area very normal with a great view of the distance mayhem on the hillsides. On the final days the wind shifted west blowing the smoke and ashes out to sea and directly over our location. This is the Sunset we witnessed through the smoke and ash cloud the first day the disaster effected us. The next morning, everything outside was covered in a ¼ inch layer of ash that was of volcanic proportion. Camera hand held from balcony, full frame.

Mike, this is a other worldly image. The light in the water doesn't look normal and the whole things looks strange.

Mike, A very dramatic image to me. Almost like an asteroid that has penetrated Earth's atmosphere and about to strike. We can only hope it is not prophetic.

Mike. Love the pink colors and love the colorful rays coming out from the center of this shot splitting the photo into three more or less equal parts. Interesting balance. While I agree that smoke is not always welcome, fire is definitely part of the natural process of life and death on planet earth. Maybe it's not all evil as we tend to think.
