Emergence
by Benjamin Olson
This is one from this past summer... Over the past year I have been investing most of my time in photographing the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota. On this particular morning I awoke a hour before sunrise and immediately jumped into my canoe. Before I started my search for moose I pulled my camera out, braced my tripod across the canoe and got ready for anything that the morning presented.
I rounded a bend in the lake and heard a unmistakeable crashing from the woods 200 yards ahead. I slowly and quietly continued my paddle forward when the young bull moose emerged from the fog. It was still relatively dark out and the sky was overcast. My cameras autofocusing wasn't cooperating in the lack of light so I resorted to autofocus. Given the scenario I should've focused using live view, but I didn't want to miss the shot while I fumbled around with that. The moose is slightly out of focus, but is still useable in my opinion and adds to the mood of the image since nothing is really sharp with the fog.
I'd like to hear your opinions!
Thanks,
Ben

14 commentsThis is a wonderful image that would work equally well in the Photo Art category IMO. The mood and the heavenly light with the mystery that the blue gives this image is very unique and very pleasing. I could easily see this hanging on the wall in someone's home. The image needs just a slight bit of clock wise rotation using the water line at the moose's knee level as your point of reference. Great post. It's always better by boat.

Thanks everyone!

Hey, thanks for the interesting story behind the image, had me on the edge of my computer chair.
I think all the suggestions for improvements have been mentioned (I especially felt your pain on the positioning of the tree behind him), but I just want to add the dark foreground and corners (vignette) really add to the mood and impact here.
Nice one...to say the least!
