WC568 Great Sand Dunes

by Scott Fricke

Gallery: Weekly ChallengePosted January 26, 20131,037 views10 comments
I thought this may fit the weekly theme as most of the layers in the dunes are formed by the alternating pattern of light and shadow as well as the highlighting of the ripples in the sand by the shadows. Any critiques or comments would be appreciated.

Canon Elan II, Provia 100, settings not recorded.

Love that Provia cyan. The scale is a bit tricky here. I assume that this was captured using a telephoto lens and that these dunes are huge and vast. Nicely isolated. Excellent modeling. The large, upper shadow makes one stop and wonder what is going on, exactly.

Textures, light, shadow, you did an exceptional job bringing all together. I'm looking at it with the top light band of sand cropped off and to me it's much more powerful. I absolutely love the cool colors everywhere except the slope in full (warm) sunlight. :toast:

Now those are blue shadows! The contrasts do give a real punch to this image. Some have suggested cropping down from the top--I think that would make another great image. Actually I think this has potential for a number of different comps from this one image. A crop up from the bottom to just above the "smile" line would make another great image. . .cropping a bit from the top and bottom could make another interesting image. . .but also great just as you composed it too. The bright pinkish area has a really interesting and unique design; the pinkish color also contrasts nicely with all the varying blue shadings. Great find and great fit for the theme, Scott.

Wow, very stark, dark, and chilly with lots of interesting "waves". It's a beauty. I might be tempted to crop just a bit from the bottom to just below the first dune edge in the shadow, but this is great as presented.
