Winter surprise

This Question Mark was enjoying the warm weather on Sunday. I was surprised to see a butterfly out in the middle of winter, but according to a book on Kansas butterflies, Question Marks are one of the few species that will come out on a warm day. I darkened and added a slight blur to the concrete to emphasize the butterfly better. 7D, ISO 400, f/11, 1/160, 282mm with extension tube, small crop.

Terrific look at this BF, excellent dof on the critter and in the larger version I can glimpse some of the refractory colors behind the eyes and at the base of the wings. Around here they can also be seen on warm winter days, which is always a winter time treat.

Hi Rob, your capture of the butterfly itself is very good. Excellent color and detail. When I first clicked on the image (before reading your comment), I was puzzled by how you achieved such good detail throughout the BF, and yet such an oof rock that the bf was perched on. I then read about blurring the concrete and it made more sense. As a photographer, I think it looks a little odd, but I think that a non -photographer would have no issue with it. Still, I think maybe this would look better without the area under the BF's left wing so blurred, but maybe that's just me. Overall, this is a very good capture of this very attractive butterfly.
