This closeup taken January 23, 2013 at El Dorado Park in Long Beach, California was an unusual one for me. I went to the lake because we expected a trout plan and Ospreys diving. The plant did not take place, but while I stood at the shore this GBH flew right toward me. I thought he was going to land on top of me, but he landed about 5 feet away. I guess he thought we were going to have lunch together. When I got over my shock I backed up to get part of him in focus. Out of 10 shots, this is the only one where his entire head and head feather were in the frame.

D800 Nikkor 600mm f/5.6 1/1250 ISO1250 Manual RAW White Balance auto Wimberley Gimbal on a tripod. Not cropped, but processed in CS6 & NIK

Very well captured portrait Patrick. I like the detail and colors best seen in the larger version. Congrats on a fine image!

good one, Patrick. great details and I like the plumes too. I like these heron portraits a lot. I would consider taking off about half the empty space on top.

Sweet portrait, Patrick. Don't you hate it when they're too close?
